Finance salaries in Europe (2026)

Financial analyst to CFO — European finance pay benchmarks for 2026.

Finance pay in Europe is anchored by two hubs: London for markets and investment roles, Frankfurt and Zurich for banking and asset management. Corporate finance roles — FP&A, controlling, accounting — follow the general city index much more closely and are therefore highly predictable per market.

Qualification matters more here than in any other function. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CFA or a local equivalent adds a step-change to base salary, typically 15–25% at the point of qualification, and unlocks the controller and head-of tracks.

Bonuses are a much larger share of total pay than elsewhere: 10–20% in corporate finance, 30–100%+ in investment banking and buy-side roles. The base figures below exclude all variable pay.

How to negotiate in Europe

Anchor on a range, never a single number

Give the band you researched for that exact city and seniority, and place your target at the lower third of it. A range signals you know the market; a single number invites a counter that lands below it.

Quote the city, not the country

National averages hide 40–60% spreads. Saying 'the Amsterdam band for this scope is €X–€Y' is far harder to dismiss than 'the Dutch average is €Z'.

Negotiate the whole package

Base, bonus, equity, signing bonus, pension contribution, remote allowance, training budget and holiday days are all negotiable — and often easier to move than base when a company runs strict pay bands.

Let the employer name a number first

If asked for expectations early, answer with the market band and ask what range is budgeted for the role. Most European postings now have an internal band even when the ad does not show it.

Bring evidence, not need

Tie the ask to scope and results — headcount managed, revenue influenced, systems owned — not to rent or personal costs. Hiring managers can defend results to finance; they cannot defend need.

Get it in writing before you accept

Confirm base, bonus mechanics, review timing and start date in the offer letter. Verbal promises about a raise 'after six months' rarely survive a manager change.

Finance & Accounting salary FAQ

Where are finance salaries highest in Europe?

Zurich and London, followed by Frankfurt, Dublin and Copenhagen. Frankfurt specifically over-indexes for banking, risk and treasury roles relative to other German cities.

How much does a professional qualification add?

Newly qualified accountants typically see a 15–25% base jump, and qualification is a hard gate for controller and head-of-finance roles at most companies.

Are finance bonuses included in these numbers?

No. These are gross base salaries. Add 10–20% for corporate finance, and substantially more in investment banking, private equity and asset management.

Is FP&A better paid than controlling?

FP&A tends to pay 5–10% more at the same level because it sits closer to commercial decision-making, but controlling has a clearer path to Financial Controller and CFO in industrial companies.
